Obama Gaining Ground With Christians
The Christian research firm The Barna Group reported their recent poll showing Obama gaining more support
from evangelical Christians. While McCain is still the overwhelming winner in this segment of the Christian population (63%), Obama has been converting a sizable number of evangelicals to his side of the ballot. He currently has the support of 23%, which is up from the 9% mark he had in May.
Amongst all born again Christians, the race is basically a dead heat with McCain garnering 45% to 43% over Obama. This latest poll shows a very sharp contrast to the 2004 election in which President Bush received 62% of the born again Christian vote.
An equally interesting statistic in the Barna poll is the sharp difference between the older and younger generation of born again Christians. Those over the age of 40 are decidedly pro McCain, with people 60 and over giving him a 10 point advantage over Obama. They eye opener however is that amongst 20-30 year olds, Obama is holding a 13 point advantage. Given those statistics, I’m guessing that there are probably some pretty lively political discussions at some of our family get togethers.
